You don’t need expensive wine and caviar to have a great picnic! It’s the ambiance and the company that matter most – so, get out there, have fun and enjoy some of these good picnic food ideas that won’t break the bank.
Today is my husband and my 16th wedding anniversary! It’s so hard to believe we’ve been married that long.
But, we’ve got a 15 year old daughter to prove it, so it must be true.
Last weekend was his birthday and of course, Mother’s day. We went out to dinner at a fancy seafood restaurant and had an awesome meal to celebrate.
But, man is it expensive to go out for dinner anymore!
So, instead of spending more money on dinner out again tonight, we’re going on an adventure…with some good picnic food and fishing throw in for fun.
Now that the weather has warmed up, we can finally check out some of the cool things surrounding our new home.
Over the winter, the husband researched things we could do in the summer and found this really cool brook nearby.
It’s deep in the forest on a dirt road. The towering pines hang over the road as you drive along the edge of the brook.
It’s a really cool spot and I’m excited to spend our anniversary there.
We’re just going to hang out, fish and eat some really good picnic food.
Oh and get eaten by mosquitoes…I’m sure they’ll be hanging out, too.
Since we’re heading out to enjoy some picnic food and fun, I thought you might like to take your special someone on a picnic, too.
Just don’t rush out and spend a bunch of money on pre-made picnic food!
I’ve gathered up a bunch of good picnic food ideas that won’t break the bank and I’ve shared them below.
So, get out your picnic basket and let’s get started!
Snacks and Finger Foods
Sweet Corn Salsa
Sweet Zucchini Pickle Relish
Parmesan Garlic Bread
Prepare Parmesan Garlic Bread ahead of time and wrap in foil. Slice and serve.
It’s great warm or cold!
Homemade Pizza Muffins
These Homemade Pizza Muffins are perfect for picnics.
They taste just like pizza, but there’s no mess and you don’t need a plate – just eat them straight out of the wrapper.
Loaded Baked Potato Salad
Mini BBQ Meatloaf
Meatloaf is perfect for a picnic! It tastes great warm or cold.
You can eat it on it’s own or put it on bread and make a meatloaf sandwich instead.
Cheesy Meatball Subs
Prepare Cheesy Meatball Subs ahead and heat them on a campfire or grill!
Just store the meatballs in a plastic container with a lid and wrap each sub roll in aluminum foil before you leave the house.
When you get to your picnic destination, just open up the rolls, drop in the meatballs and heat on the grill or eat them cold instead.
Homemade Chicken Patties
Homemade Chicken Patties are another good picnic food because they taste great hot or cold.
Make your chicken patties at home and bring along the buns. If you want them heated, wrap in foil and heat on the campfire when you’re ready to eat.
Homemade Pastrami Lunch Meat
Homemade Pastrami Lunch meat is always a good choice for picnics.
It’s easy to bring along, doesn’t require any heating and it tastes great with sliced veggies or on a sandwich.
These Snickerdoodle Scones are perfect for bringing along on a picnic!
No plates needed – just store them in a zipper bag and reach in and grab when you’re ready for dessert.
Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding
Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding is another good picnic food that’s easy to eat and requires no dishes.
Homemade Cream Puffs
It doesn’t get easier (or more classic) than Homemade Cream Puffs for a picnic. They’re simple to make ahead and they store well for bringing along on a picnic.
Apple Cranberry Cobbler
Last, but certainly not least is my Apple Cranberry Cobbler. This, my friends is perfect for bringing on a picnic.
The consistency is much like a pancake and it’s easy to eat with your hands or even on a napkin.
I hope you’ve enjoyed perusing these amazingly good picnic foods. I know they’ve made me hungry. I’m off now to prepare our picnic dinner for tonight!
