Have an excess of green beans in your garden this year? Don’t waste them! Learn the steps to freezing green beans at home and you’ll get to enjoy the harvest all year long!
Unfortunately, I planted my beans a little late this year and so, they aren’t ready to pick, yet. But, my neighbor has a ton of excess green beans and he’s already had enough of canning and preserving them and he’s giving them away. So, lucky for me, when I ran into him the other day, he handed me a whole giant grocery bag of yellow and green beans. I was going to can them, but, it’s so stinking hot that I don’t want to pull out the canning equipment and I decided to try freezing green beans instead.
I’ve never preserved beans before, so it was a first for me. But, the process is pretty much the same as freezing corn, potatoes, carrots or any other vegetable and it’s EASY!
I didn’t time it, but it probably took me an hour from start to finish to prepare for freezing the green beans. And I ended up with a whole gallon zipper bag of frozen green beans for the winter.
Which is awesome!
I mean, seriously, it probably cost me all of $1.00 (if that!) between electricity, propane and the zipper bag – so, my frozen green beans were pretty much free and it doesn’t get any better than that!
So, if you have a giant green bean harvest or a really awesome neighbor – then, let’s get started!
Freezing Green Beans: Step By Step Instructions
- Large stockpot
- Fresh green beans or yellow beans
- Salt (optional)
- Large baking sheet
- Gallon zipper bag(s)
Fill a large stockpot with water and heat on high temperature until boiling.
Wash green beans and remove the ends using a knife or snap them off with your hands instead.
Cut beans into 1″ long chunks.
Add green beans to the boiling water. Add salt, if desired (the amount will depend on you and your family’s taste buds). The water will cease boiling once the beans have been added.
Heat beans on high temperature until the water begins to boil again. Remove from temperature.
Pour beans into a strainer or colander and immediately rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. Continue rinsing until the beans are no longer steaming. Drain.
Spread the beans onto a large baking sheet and place in the freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Scoop frozen beans into gallon zipper bags and return to the freezer.
That’s it! You’ve succeeded at freezing green beans for the winter!
